History of Melbourne Cup Day

The Melbourne Cup has been around for quite a long time.

The first race was run in 1861 and has been run on the traditional first Tuesday of the month since 1875. A trophy wasn’t even awarded for the race until 1865.

The race was originally started by two rival racing clubs, the Victoria Turf Club and the Victoria Jockey Club.

The two clubs warred with each other and as a result of the conflict, management of the course and the Cup suffered, the track was sabotaged, and both clubs went into debt.

So they merged in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club, the group that hosts the race to this day, and in 1875 the Melbourne Cup was officially proclaimed a public holiday.
